OVERVIEW
Roly Poly is a 1 on 1 multiplayer arcade game where one player controls the human (the board) and the other controls an insect stuck on the board.
The objective of player 1 is to tilt the board to kill player 2 with the marble and the objective of player 2 is to survive until the end of the time.
Both players have a limited amount of time to achieve their objectives.
MY ROLE IN THE TEAM
-
Produce the level design for the plateau
-
Design the main mechanics
-
Balancing mechanics
PROJECT CONTRAINTS
-
2 days to make the game
-
Make a 3D game in a team of 8
-
I was the only level designer on the project
MECHANICS
CHANGE ON THE BOARD
For the insect, initialy, we want to the player had the capacity to curl up into the marble to become invincible but too complicate to balance, we don't integrated it.
-
The insect can only move, but its speed is higher than that of the marble.
-
For the human (the board) :
-
Another ball spawn at the farthest point from the insect halfway through the time
-
Every 30 seconds, glue spots will appear where the insect lands and remain on the tray, slowing the insect down when it walks on them.
-
Video steps :
-
1 - The player 2 take the control of the player with the keyboard arrow
-
2 - The player 1 take the control of the board to move the ball with the keyboard ZQSD
-
3 - Every 30 seconds, glue spots appear on the position of the insect
-
4 - A second ball appear on the farthest spawn points from the insect
-
5 - In this case, the player 1 managed to kill player 2 with the marble
LEVEL DESIGN
The map was designed from a marble game maze with several objectives :
- allow smooth navigation for both players
- little map to force interactions
- many spawn point for the second marble at strategic locations

Help the insect
Like you can see on the diagram, the is no dead end to avoid a situation where the insect is stuck and cannoit avoid the death.
I design the map to have a "infinite" flow, the insect can turn around indefinitely (diagram 1), paired with some spot, thanks to the insect's speed, it can scatter the ball quite easily (diagram 2)
Help the marble
Due to the slow speed for tilting the board, it's a bit tricky to control the marble. To help the marble, there's glue spots and the second marble, I made :
-
Put straight lines to allow the marble to pick speed (diagram 1)
-
Add angles to make it easier to navigate and pick up speed in the corners.
